To overcome the uncertainty of whether a tradable is starting or ending a trend, you will find the commodity channel index (CCI) to be quite useful. This is the only practical application of this indicator. It is a price momentum indicator that looks at prices relative to the average. At most charting services, you can input your own look-back period. To avoid whipsaws, don’t use too short a period. At the same time, using too long a period will result in missed signals. If the CCI of a tradable is high, prices are high relative to the average price. Correspondingly, if it is low, prices are low relative to the average price.

The usual range for the CCI is within +/- 100 range. When you see it move outside this range, price movements are no longer considered random. This is when you look for trading opps. Let’s take a look. If the reading rises above +100, you should consider going long. When it falls below +100, you should exit your position. Likewise, when the CCI falls below -100, you should consider shorting the tradable. When it moves above -100, you should cover your short.
