Butterflies and Condors

The butterfly and condors options strategies are best used during range bound markets.

A butterfly consists of all calls or all puts, using three different strikes. You buy the wings of the butterfly and sell the body. For instance, if you thought ABC stock was going to stay around the $50 level for the next month, you might opt for a butterfly strategy by buying one 45 call, selling two 50 calls and buying one 55 call.

The overall strategy has limited risk (the price to enter the trade) and limited profit potential.

A condor, on the other hand, uses four strikes versus three. If, for example, you thought ABC stock would trade between 50 and 55, you might consider a 45-50-55-60 condor. This would see you buying the outer strikes and selling the inner strikes for a debit.

A condor's max profit will be lower than it would be with a butterfly, simply because with a condor you often have to use historically volatile stocks just to get a decent price – the reason being you are widening out the strikes you use, meaning you pay more to enter the trade.
