Linda Raschke says she quit trading options them in 1989, when the edge had pretty much been arbed out. She claims that there is no edge in trading them any more – at least not in terms of putting on spreads, or doing arbitrage.

According to her, putting on a spread is simply another way of either making a directional play, or making a bet on volatility. You could make the same trades with the underlying stock. And, you can still get 10-1 leverage deals at prop houses.

However, for people who have day jobs, options are still useful. Such people can put a position on, and not have to worry about every little tick movement in the underlying issue.

They are a good way for newbie traders to lesson risk. They also keep new traders from obsessing over ‘noise.’

Regardless of experience level, all traders MUST have a game plan that sees them cutting a loss at a certain point. In other words, at what point are you going to exit your outright position, spread or long straddles?
