The Dollar Standard

Think again! The Chinese yuan is pegged to the dollar. Emerging-market nations borrow in dollars. Most commodities, especially oil, are priced in dollars. And, although Saddam Hussein insisted on being paid in euros for Iraqi oil, when he was captured last December he was carrying US$750,000 in US$100 bills – not euros, not sterling, not yen.

At the end of 2003, 63.8 per cent of central bank reserves were held in dollars, compared with 19.7 per cent in euros, 4.8 per cent in yen, and 4.4 per cent in sterling.

When it comes to trading in the US$1.9-trillion-a-day global foreign exchange market, 89 per cent of all transactions involve the dollar, compared with 37 per cent for the euro and 20 per cent for the yen. So, keep this in mind vis-à-vis your currency trading strategy.
