International ETFs: (as at March 5, 2004)

Getting a foothold in foreign markets is as easy as buying an exchange-traded fund, or ETF. Such an international fund tracks a foreign stock market index, and trades on an exchange, such as Toronto or the American Stock Exchange – just like a stock does. It is cheap (with a management expense ratio below 1%), and it gives you international diversification with a single purchase.

For example, the XIN Iunits Intl Equity Indx Rsp Fund (TSX) taps into most of the developed world outside North America. With an MER of just 0.35%, it trades the MSCI EAFE Index, which consists of 21 country indexes in Europe, Australia, and the Far East. Considered Canadian content, it is therefore 100% RRSP-eligible.

Or, how’s about the iShares MSCI Emerging Markets Index Fund (AMEX:EEM). It tracks the indexes of 26 countries that have emerging economies, including China, South Korea, Mexico, Pakistan, and Taiwan.

And, yet again, you can zero in on a particular country: iShares MSCI Australia Index Fund (Amex: EWA), the iShares MSCI Japan Index Fund (AMEX: EWJ), or the iShares MSCI Mexico Index Fund (Amex: EWW).
