The U.S. dollar is the world’s reserve currency and, as such, the policy wonks at the Fed are the stewards of the global financial system. They play a key role in ensuring the stability of the world’s monetary system. The dollar is a medium of global trade and investment. Central banks hold hundreds of billions of dollars as reserves. Many countries are beholden to Fed for their monetary policies and, accordingly, peg their currencies to the U.S. dollar. Their respective inflation rates are at the mercy of any mistakes the Fed makes. The Fed appears to be signaling that it favors a devalued currency. If the rest of the world becomes disenchanted with U.S. monetary management, a run on the dollar could ensue, and this would necessitate the Fed to raise rates promptly, resulting in a fairly severe recession. The Fed, worried about growth after the recent credit implosion, has been lowering rates – seemingly oblivious to the fact that there is apparent growth in the economy (third-quarter growth higher than the second).
