It’s the vice of the bosses at Merrill Lynch, Citigroup, and Bear Stearns stupid. They’re to blame for the credit crunch and the falling U.S. dollar. They were the architects of new kinds of high-grade bonds that only they could comprehend. The financial world finally caught on to its dilemma of owning hundreds of billions of tainted U.S. mortgage-backed bonds. As this saga unfolded, these seemingly invincible global investment banks on Wall Street soon realized that they were responsible for enormous sums. And, so it was no big revelation that the dollar continued its downward spiral, and gold prices climbed – all the while investors unloaded big American bank stocks and U.S. mortgage bonds (where there were bids). To the rescue came Bernanke – saving the hides of the bad boys of Wall Street, once considered to be the richest (but perhaps not the smartest) in the world. All this gave foreign investors a major headache, and brought foreign investment in U.S. debt instruments to a halt (other than Treasuries and high-grade bonds). The plain truth is the U.S. needs an influx of US$2-billion a day to offset its trade deficit losses. The question is, will the housing and mortgage crisis end up not being as bad as it is being painted (in which case, the dollar will have legs), or will the dollar and Wall Street continue to be locked in a death grip?
