Eventually, your currency trading strategy will include the Chinese currency, once it is decoupled from the U.S. dollar, and floats freely. Here are the little known facts about that currency:

Ų The Chinese currency is called Renminbi. Translation: People’s Currency.

Ų It is issued by the Bank of China, the yuan being the popular unit.

Ų One U.S. dollar equals about 8.3 yuan (since about a decade ago).

Ų Denominations are: 0.10, 0:20, 0.50, 1, 2, 5, 10, 50, and 100 yuan.

Ų Smaller values are issued as coins: 1 yuan = 10 jiao = 100 fen.

Ų 1023: The Chinese were the first to use paper currency during S’ung dynasty.

Ų 1948: The People’s Bank of China was created Dec. 1.

Ų It was the first sector to be socialized by Chairman Mao’s new republic.

Ų 1966-1976: The Bank stripped of many functions during Cultural Revolution.

Ų But, it regained responsibility for issuing and controlling currency.

Ų 1983: The Bank becomes a central bank; legally confirmed in 1995.

Ų The Bank is modeled after the U.S. Federal Reserve system.

Ų Monetary policy is managed by various local offices.

Ų 1998-99: The Bank pressured to devalue Renminbi (Asian currency crisis).

Ų The Chinese are now lining up at banks to sell U.S. dollars for yuan.

Ų China’s foreign reserves are climbing, as the Bank buys dollars.

Ų The Bank is buying those dollars to keep the exchange rate steady.
