About

I am a speaker, trader, writer, aviator, car nut, Harley enthusiast but, above all else, I am here for you at TradingSmarts.

In 2003, I became involved with the forex (currency trading), and it immediately captured my attention, imagination and interest.  I went on to found a forex site to offer affordable and quality forex training to traders of all skill levels.  My team and I have since trained thousands of aspiring traders internationally via books, conferences, online video courses and live seminars and workshops.

Ever since 2003, the forex has been my primary focus (for reasons I will share with you later on from time-to-time), although I still keep an eye on the futures and stock markets.

At one point in my forex career, I was one of the top IB brokers for FX Solutions in New Jersey.  My team and I created the training material for that broker that was used by its clients for their trading.

I enjoy speaking engagements, having participated in the Money Show in NY and Vegas and also conducting my own seminars and workshops – the latest being a two-day event at the MGM Grand in Vegas attended by traders from around the world.

For five years prior to the formation of that forex site, I ran TradingSmarts (and still do – at least I’m back at it), specializing in providing training material for traders of all persuasions – commodities futures, currencies on the forex and stocks.  My book, ‘How to Trade Like a Pro in One Hour,’ was a hit and received rave reviews from around the world.

Unfortunately, during my involvement with the forex (which I am still involved with), I let TradingSmarts slide, and it quickly became out-dated.  I couldn’t be in two places at the same time.  It tugged at my heart strings, but I had to do what I had to do.  I feel bad that I let my fans down during my absence from TradingSmarts, but I am now firmly back in the saddle at TradingSmarts and raring to go.  I hope you aren’t one of the people I let down.  If you are, please accept my humble apologies.  I hope to make up for lost time and make it up to you.

I am totally committed to helping you with your trading, regardless of which market you are involved with.

One of the things I love about what I do is giving presentations all over the place – here at the MGM Grand in Vegas with Ken Calhoun of Day Trading University.  The ladies added a nice touch.

And, here I am at the Money Show in New York, one of my favourite cities.

Again, a picture in New York – this time outside the NASDAQ exchange building.

Next, a picture I am most proud of – my dear friend Peter Lake.  As at this writing, Peter is in his mid-nineties.  When I first met him some 10 years ago I guess, he was a tailor – and a good one at that.  As a young lad, he was an air gunner/wireless operator during WWII.  He was actually the inspiration behind me taking up flying finally, after years of procrastination.

At any rate, when I used to frequent Peter’s place of business, I noticed he was invariably huddled over the stock pages in the newspaper, checking out quotes.  I asked him why he wasn’t using a computer to check up on his stocks.  He didn’t have one.  So, he got one, and I proceeded to show him how to use it, mouse and all (what a challenge).  I then went on to show him how to trade the right way.  His broker was making him broker.

It was quite interesting because thereafter, whenever I would go to visit him in his shop, he would be glued to his computer screen, looking at stock charts.  Whenever a customer would come in for some tailoring, he would get quite agitated, because that would take him away from his new-found love.

To make a fat story thin, he finally got out of the tailoring business, and took his computer home to devote himself to online day trading.  He has never made more money in his life, and he is as happy as a clam.  His success rate astonishes me.  He is actually better at it than I am, I hate to admit.  He has developed a system around my original teachings that he is comfortable with, and it works for him.  That’s all that matters.

Not bad for a guy in his nineties.  Way to go Peter!!!  Goes to show anybody can trade successfully with the right knowledge and tutoring.  It’s not rocket science.  Just keep it simple, and use just a few indicators.  Don’t get carried away with indicator fascination.

Student of Peter R. Bain

I dreamt of becoming a pilot ever since I was 19.  I finally got around to it at the ripe old age of 69, thanks to Peter’s encouragement.  I only wish I had done it sooner.  But, it’s never too late.

Learning to fly is one of the hardest things I have ever undertaken – far more difficult than trading or anything else I have ever done in my life.  It took me 50 Hobbs hours (a device used in aviation to measure the time that an aircraft is in use) before my instructor would let me go solo.  I think I set a club record for the most number of hours anyone took before going solo.  The average is more like 25-35.

I never thought I would get my head around the landings.  Sounds easy on paper, but putting it into practice is another thing.  You can’t explain it to anybody.  You just have to do it – over and over and over again – 50 Hobbs hours worth in my case.  And, then there’s the wind.  Landing in a cross-wind calls for doing something known as the ‘slip.’  I still have trouble with that, so much so that, on one of my last landings, I got blown off the runway by wind sheer.  Not a fun experience.  I subsequently had to do a Transport Canada-imposed check ride with my Chief Flight Instructor just to prove I could fly safely.  How embarrassing, but I passed.  I now only fly when it is sunny and warm – and no wind, thank you very much.  I am a fair weather flyer.

If I’ve learned anything about flying, it is to NEVER exceed your comfort zone.  Actually, a former Snow Birds pilot gave me that line.  I never take chances, and I don’t ever let anything influence my decisions – like hurrying up for whatever reason – like being late or rushed.  It’s better to not take off than to have to figure out how to land, after it’s too late and a weather front has moved in.  I hate fog.

Peter R. Bain in Front of Cessna 172

Since I was 19, I had always wanted to fly in a jet – let alone fly it. Well, dreams do come true. July 21/15 at around 1 pm, I got to fly an L39 jet trainer in Santa Fe, New Mexico with my instructor Larry Salganek of the Jet Warbird Training Center. It was the thrill of a lifetime. Following ground school, up and away we went. Larry let me take the controls for most of the flight – a lot easier than flying a Cessna 172. Now, when I see a jet flying overhead, I know exactly what is going on in the cockpit.

After that, I went to the Oshkosh air show with my daughter and her boyfriend, who is an instructor.  For the first time, I got to meet my all-time hero Sean Tucker, who is an amazing stunt pilot (picture taken of me with Sean and my daughter Lisa).  He put on the best performance at the air show.  I love his attitude towards life.  No matter what you do in life, he encourages us all to do it with gusto.  More often than not, you will see him with a smile on his face.  When he first started out to learn flying in his teens, he would get sick every time he went up.  It took him four years to get his private pilot’s license.  I believe he finally got over his air sickness when he went flying with a stunt pilot.  But, if I heard him correctly, he says he still fights his fear of flying every time he goes up.  I guess it’s called, ‘confronting your fears.’  He practices his stunts every day, and works out every day to stay in top shape.

I always loved the looks of the Plymouth Prowler, so I went looking for one.  After a four-year search, I finally found one that met my specs in Virginia – a black 2000 one with ~1,500 original miles on it.  A real beaut – fun to drive and head-turner wherever I go.  I could park it beside any exotic car, and it would get first notice.  Love those Formula 1 front-end bicycle wheels.  Here it is being loaded on the transport truck for the ~3,500-mile journey to my place.  Not a scratch on it in transit.  Phew!

And, last but not least, my beloved Harley – a 2009 Rocker.  When I bought it used, it had something like ~1,600 kilometres on it (not miles in Canada).  After riding it for a while, I decided it needed some more chrome.  So, with the help of a mechanic, I stripped it down to the frame and rebuilt it with all chrome parts and a new paint job.  I even had the heads and barrels diamond-cut at a place in Vegas.  It is definitely a show-piece, but I have no time for shows.  It now has probably a mere ~50 kilometres on it.  Time to get it out and make some noise.  BTW, those are 10-inch ‘ape hanger’ handle bars, for the uninitiated, and those mufflers are street-legal Screaming Eagles.
